The Matriarch

A camel matriarch in profile, head high, lashes lowered against a wind that is not shown. She carried water, wool, households, and whole lineages across distances that erased lesser animals. The rope at her cheek ends in a woven sadu tassel, the one ornament she permits. The work gives her what she was never asked for and always owed: a sovereign's portrait, unhurried, and looking past us.
