Ninety-nine beads, thumb-worn to a soft shine, moving one at a time through an elder's fingers. Each bead a name, each name known by heart, the whole practice small enough to carry anywhere and large enough to hold a life. The work comes close to the hand because that is where this devotion lives: patient, private, counted, resumed. The beads do not hurry. Neither does he.
